A 19-point spread from top to bottom. Before you read this as "Jazz is better than Indie," read why the crowd judges genres differently — these genres aren't being graded by the same people, and that explains most of the gap. With that in mind, here's what actually stands out.
Jazz tops the chart on the fewest votes — and that's the point. At 470 votes, Jazz has a fraction of Pop's turnout. Almost everyone rating a jazz track sought jazz out; it's a room full of sympathetic listeners judging a curated, canonical lineup. The 87% is real, but it's the slap rate of a genre being judged by its fans. Impressive, with an asterisk.
Rock's 86% is the number I'd actually brag about. It's nearly tied with Jazz for the top spot while carrying eleven times the votes — over 5,000, a crowd wide enough to include plenty of people who didn't come for guitars. Holding 86% across that much scrutiny is a far harder feat than topping a small poll, and by the logic of our Wilson ranking, it's the most confidently-earned score on the board.
Pop is the crowd's punching bag, and it's not close on volume. With 9,652 votes — more than any other genre by a wide margin — Pop sits second from the bottom at 70%. This is the overexposure tax in its purest form: Pop gets heard by everyone, sick-of-it votes and all, and it's represented by the whole catalogue rather than a greatest-hits reel. Being judged by the entire world is a tougher exam than being judged by your fans.
Indie in last place is the genuine surprise. You'd expect the genre built on discerning taste to clean up. Instead it's dead last at 68%. My theory: Indie's audience is the most discerning, and they're grading against the genre's own high bar rather than against the radio — a tough crowd holding a tough standard. Indie fans are hardest on Indie.
The headline isn't "Jazz good, Indie bad." It's that the crowd is kindest to genres judged by their fans and hardest on the ones everybody hears — and that Rock quietly pulled off the most impressive number on the board. Think your genre deserves better? The chart moves one vote at a time.
